Full-body dog suit - Shires

Cover-All Full Body Suit: body & paws protection
Adventure is great, but the full bath upon return is a chore. This suit is the solution to protect your dog's coat. It covers the body and goes down the legs to prevent mud and snow from sticking in the hair. Your walks remain messy for the paws, but the rest of the dog comes back clean and dry.

Equi-Flector Coat: High Visibility & Warmth
When walking your dog early in the morning or late at night in winter, you have two worries: that they get cold and that they aren't seen by cars. The Equi-Flector coat settles all that at once. Not really. A water-resistant coat helps repel moisture for a while, but it will eventually become saturated during heavy or prolonged rain. For these conditions, a truly waterproof dog coat with sealed seams provides much more reliable protection.

If your dog regularly goes out in wet weather or consistently comes home soaked and shivering after walks, a waterproof coat is the better choice. A standard fleece or knitted dog coat is generally sufficient for cool, dry conditions.

Yes. This can happen if the coat hasn't fully dried since the previous walk or if rain enters through less protected areas such as the neck opening or around the legs (except with the Shires Full-body dog suit). After walking in heavy rain, it's a good idea to check your dog's coat underneath to make sure it has stayed dry.

Not necessarily. Some waterproof coats are lightweight and designed primarily to keep rain out, with little or no thermal insulation. If your dog needs protection from both rain and cold, choose a waterproof coat with an insulated lining for added warmth during winter walks.

Yes. A waterproof coat should always be allowed to dry completely before being used again. A damp coat becomes less effective and can trap unwanted moisture against your dog's fur. Lay it flat to air dry naturally, and avoid tumble drying or placing it next to a direct heat source, as excessive heat can damage the waterproof coating.

Waterproof dog coats: keeping your dog dry without compromising comfort

A dog that comes home soaked after every rainy walk doesn't just leave muddy paw prints around the house. A consistently wet coat can also contribute to skin irritation and cause your dog to lose body heat much faster than in cold, dry weather. That's why a waterproof dog coat is an essential piece of outdoor gear whenever you're walking in the rain or damp conditions.

Waterproof vs. water-resistant: what's the difference?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they don't provide the same level of protection. A water-resistant fabric causes water to bead and roll off the surface, making it suitable for light rain or drizzle. However, it may eventually allow moisture through during prolonged rainfall. A truly waterproof fabric, combined with sealed seams or a technical waterproof membrane, prevents water from penetrating even in heavy rain. If you regularly walk your dog in wet weather, a genuinely waterproof coat is the better choice.

Is a wet dog coat still effective?

Not indefinitely. Even a high-quality waterproof dog coat will lose effectiveness if it doesn't have time to dry completely between walks. Over time, trapped moisture can reduce its waterproof performance and eventually allow dampness to reach your dog's coat underneath. Let the coat air dry completely after each use, or keep a second coat on hand so you can rotate between them.

What if my dog mainly needs extra warmth?

Waterproof protection keeps your dog dry, but it doesn't necessarily provide enough insulation for freezing temperatures. If your dog is especially sensitive to the cold, consider choosing an insulated dog coat with a warm lining that's designed specifically for winter weather.
