How to choose a truly comfortable dog bed

A dog bed is first and foremost a place to rest. To choose the right one, it is therefore better to start by observing your dog rather than looking only at the shape or appearance of the bed.

Do they sleep curled up or fully stretched out? Do they seek out soft surfaces or regularly leave their bed for the floor? Do they like to rest their head on something raised? Do they often change position while sleeping? These habits provide valuable clues about the type of bed in which your dog actually feels comfortable. Size, thickness, raised sides, padding and even the location of the bed are all important factors.

Dog bed, cushion or mat: which should you choose?

Different types of dog beds suit different preferences and uses.

It is also perfectly possible for the same dog to enjoy several options depending on the time of day: a cosy bed with raised sides for the night and a more open mat for resting near you during the day, for example.

The right size: let your dog choose their position

When choosing the size, make sure your dog can at least lie down comfortably, turn around and change position without constantly ending up half outside the bed. Observing their preferred sleeping position is particularly useful here. A dog that almost always sleeps curled up will not use their bed in the same way as a dog that likes to stretch out fully on their side.

Also be careful with very thick raised sides: the external dimensions of a bed may seem generous while the actual sleeping area available is much smaller.

Why does my dog sometimes prefer sleeping on the floor?

This behaviour does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with their bed. The floor may simply be cooler, which can be particularly appealing when temperatures rise or after physical activity.

This is also why there is no need to insist that your dog always sleeps in their bed. If they have several safe and comfortable places to rest, allowing them to choose means they can adapt their position and sleeping surface to what they need at the time.

However, if a dog that used to spend a lot of time in their bed suddenly starts avoiding it, simply check its condition: flattened padding, moisture, odours, excessive heat or a location that has become less peaceful may explain the change.

Where should you place your dog's bed?

An excellent bed placed in the wrong location may remain empty. Many dogs appreciate being able to rest somewhere quiet without being completely isolated from life in the home. As far as possible, avoid busy areas where your dog may regularly be stepped over or disturbed, as well as places exposed to draughts or excessive heat.

If your dog constantly changes where they rest throughout the day, this is not necessarily a problem that needs correcting. They may alternately be seeking your company, more peace and quiet or simply a different temperature.

Do you need several beds for one dog?

It is not essential, but it can be practical if your dog spends time in several areas of the home. For example, they may have a main bed for the night and an additional mat or cushion in the room where you spend much of the day.

A dog blanket or portable mat can also provide a familiar, comfortable place when travelling, at a restaurant, when visiting friends or family, or on holiday, without having to take their main bed with you.

At Waf & Co, comfort starts with your dog's habits

When choosing from our selection of dog beds, cushions and resting mats, we recommend starting with your dog: their size, preferred sleeping position, where they like to rest and your lifestyle. The most sophisticated bed is not necessarily the one they will sleep best in.

Ultimately, a good bed is one your dog willingly chooses to return to, while remaining free to sleep elsewhere whenever they feel like it.
