Choosing the right collar is especially important for small dogs. Their tracheas are narrower, their build is often more delicate, and even minor changes in fit can quickly affect their comfort. Here's what to consider when selecting a collar that's truly suited to a small breed.

Why are small dogs more sensitive around the neck?

Many small breeds, such as Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Bichons, and Pugs, are naturally more prone to tracheal issues, sometimes due to inherited anatomical traits. Repeated pressure on the neck—even if relatively mild—can contribute to chronic coughing, tracheal collapse, or breathing difficulties in predisposed dogs. That's why choosing the right collar and adjusting it correctly is even more important than it is for larger breeds.

How to fit a collar correctly on a small dog

The two-finger rule still applies: you should be able to slide two flat fingers comfortably between the collar and your dog's neck. However, achieving the right fit is more critical on a small neck, where just a few millimetres can make the difference between a comfortable collar and one that rubs or feels restrictive. Choose a collar with precise adjustability and closely spaced sizing holes rather than a standard collar designed for larger dogs.

Small dogs, especially puppies, can gain or lose weight more quickly than you might expect. A collar that fits perfectly one month may become too tight or too loose the next. Check the fit regularly—at least once a month, or more often during periods of rapid growth—to keep your dog comfortable at all times.

Choose lightweight, durable materials for sensitive skin

A collar that is too bulky or heavy can be uncomfortable for a small dog to wear throughout the day and may even affect its natural movement.
